MARI
She didn't evacuate.
A shiba. Three puppies born that morning. One earthquake. More than two weeks alone in a broken village. When the humans came back, the puppies were fed. She was skin and bones.

Her story
Three puppies.
In Yamakoshi, a mountain village of terraced rice fields and koi ponds in Niigata, Japan, a shiba named Mari gives birth to three puppies.
The ground breaks.
The Chūetsu earthquake. Magnitude 6.8, shindo 7, the top of Japan's scale. Houses fold, roads slide into the valleys, the village is cut off. Her old owner is pinned under a fallen cabinet. In the story Japan tells, Mari gets her puppies to safety, then goes to him.
The shelters don't take dogs.
The whole village is evacuated. Mari and three newborn puppies stay behind, alone, in a broken village, through the aftershocks. No humans. No food. No one coming.
They come back.
A newspaper prints a photo of a dog still in the village, and her family recognizes her. When they are allowed back in, all three puppies are alive and well-fed. Mari is skin and bones. She had given them everything she had.
Japan never forgets.
A picture book, Mari of Yamakoshi and her Three Puppies, funds the rebuild. Toho turns it into a film, A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies. At the end of 2007 the family home is rebuilt and Mari goes home.
Goodbye, Mari.
She dies at home, aged 15. Her puppies grew up in Nagaoka and Niigata. One of them stayed in Yamakoshi.

Aftershocks.
Every crash, the same thing happens. The insiders get the helicopter. The funds get the shelter. The trenches get left in the village.
And every time, someone stays.
That's not a degen. That's Mari.
